10 Website Addons That Will Help Grow Your Mailing List

(Last Updated On: August 2, 2016)

Growing a mailing list is extremely important for growing a business. The more email addresses you have, the larger your potential customer base will be. Email marketing can be a powerful marketing strategy, but without a large mailing list, it won’t be effective, no matter how great your email is. Why? It’s all about your conversion rate – email recipients turned into buyers – which will almost always be far less than 50%. Most of the time it’s less than 10% and sometimes, marketers are even happy to receive a 3% conversion rate.

To help you grow your mailing list, we’ve got a list of 10 website addons you should be using. Follow this list and you’ll be growing your list in no time:

1. Use a sign-up form

This is the best way to get email addresses from potential customers. Simply install a sign-up form – with a catchy CTA – to submit an email address. The sign-up form needs to have a purpose (receive a free monthly newsletter, etc.). Make sure you mention that you will not sell email addresses to third-party businesses. This will give visitors reassurance that they won’t receive hundreds of spam emails.

2. Write an entertaining blog

A great way to get people interested in your business is by creating an interesting blog. The blog should NOT be used as a sales pitch. Instead, it should be used as a way to showcase your knowledge of a specific subject related to your business. For example, if you have an SEO company, giving away free Internet marketing tips would be useful. If the readers are entertained by your blog, they’ll give out an email address because they will be genuinely interested in hearing from you.

3. Create a contest

Creating a contest on your website is another excellent way to get email addresses. But the contest must be worth it in order to get visitors to sign-up. Create a contest with a cool prize that is related to your line of work. For example, a travel agency could offer a chance to win a free flight to Las Vegas for signing up. Part of the sign-up should require participants to enter an email address and receive future emails.

4. Promote a free eBook

You can either write the eBook yourself or promote an eBook written by someone else that would be useful to your target audience. Promote the eBook right on your home page with a “enter an email address to receive the eBook for free” button. Just make sure you’re promoting an eBook that is actually interesting to read. If the eBook is weak, your audience won’t come back to your site.

5. Install a pop-up welcome form on your home page

This one is definitely trick, and if you don’t respect your visitors, it can backfire. A pop-up asking for my email address to receive a “free monthly newsletter” shouldn’t bother most readers, as long as you don’t force yourself on them. Hiding the “close” button, or making the pop-up difficult to close by other means will make your bounce rate higher than a Pogo stick. But, if you give users the ability to close it, you will retain visitors. The key is making your message effective and not forcing it upon your readers; nobody wants that.

6. Build a “Reasons to Sign-Up” Page

One of the best ways to build an email marketing list is by creating a “Reasons to Sign-Up” page on your website. Not sure why website visitors should sign-up? Just ask your current customers what they enjoy most about your products and services. If you can show your site visitors why they would benefit from giving you their email address, they probably will give it to you.

7. Include contact payment forms

When someone purchases something from you, that’s a good thing. But it doesn’t ensure the purchaser will be a long-term customer. It could just be a one-time purchase for them. If you ask for contact information – including email address – when your customers buy something online, you can then continue sending this customer offers. That’s why department stores always ask customers for email addresses.

8. Create a survey form

Surveys are a proven way to gain information about your target market. Something they are also effective at is securing email addresses. Create a survey form on your website – something related to your type of business – and require each participant to enter an email address.

9. Post an email archive

This is something most businesses don’t think to do, but it is effective. Add an email archive to your website – this will show visitors the type of emails they can expect to receive. Hopefully your emails are entertaining. If not, you might want to avoid putting up an archive and focus on building more interesting emails!

10. Create a “Promotions” page

Everyone loves an exciting promotion such as a “Back to School Sale” or “Christmas in July Sale”. Creating a separate page on your site exclusively for current promotions will bring you some immediate business. It’s also a great way to collect email addresses (include sign-up form when they pay), so that your customers can be kept up-to-date with recent promotions.

There are lots of ways to grow your mailing list, and we’ve just given you 10 of them – not all of them will work for you, but pick the addons that suit your business and website best, and you’ll be growing your list in no time.
